Demo-a-go-go

We’re off to the construction races!

Part of me is still in denial we’re finally here, then a Day 1 “floor-vibrating” noise complaint from the neighbor reassured me that oh yes, we definitely are. Exposed wood beams, rusted out nails, plywood snapping. Drywall dust is my current Chanel No. 5. A scent that takes you someplace, but in this example, it’s more about where we are going.

This is going to be the new center part to the whole space. Looks small, but there’s a whole studio on the other side of the wall to the right, and a big room with a balcony behind camera.

As a self-funded starter, the tailoring of resources was, and still is, it’s own craft. Would be lovely to have a team of architects and interior designers cheerleading you on through the end. But their hourleys are bloody nauseating. We had one space planning meeting, where the table was full of 2 master architects, an interior designer and a Jr architect. Their hourly combined total made an advertising day rate look like tuppence. And we were there for 4 FLIPPING HOURS. Should’ve been my best decision making session, but I was too distracted watching the money birds shit on the window.

It’s days of being the owner-interior-designer-general-contractor-project-manager, that cause me to appreciate the advertising days of yore. (NOTE that I didn’t say ‘miss’ - because I definitely don’t.) When I had a team of producers (aka ‘doers’) and everyone was answering the question before it was asked. Or a human iCal that walked into your office and reminded you when everything was due. (Dear god do miss those folks.) - No one ever said ‘No.’ - Growing up in that environment, and remaining there for about 10 years - it was magical. And sadly, a flawed impression. Because it’s not like that everywhere. And those amazing folks are unicorns.

Now back to work. I need to grab my fairy wings and sprinkle saw dust on the contractors in hopes they can speed it up a bit. Flutter, Flutter!
